Chapter 13

The ladder rungs were cold against Nova’s flesh hand, slick with the humidity of five thousand breaths trapped in a dead-end tunnel.

She climbed slowly. Deliberately.

Below her, the muttering of the refugees died out. They watched her ascend toward the silver hatch that had just rejected her. They looked at her back, waiting for her to turn around and give the order to retreat. They were waiting for the failure.

Nova reached the top rung. She hung there for a second, staring at the black glass panel of the Bio-Lock.

ACCESS DENIED. DNA MISMATCH.

The red letters blinked at her. Mocking her. Reminding her that no matter how many monsters she killed, no matter how much mana she channeled, she was still just a rat from the slums trying to sneak into the palace.

"You're asking the wrong question," Nova whispered to the machine.

She didn't wipe the sweat from her palm. She didn't try to trick the sensors.

She made a fist with her right hand—the glass hand. The prosthetic hummed, the blue data swirling inside the translucent shell like a trapped storm.

"You want DNA?" Nova hissed. "Here."

She pulled her arm back and punched the panel.

CRACK.

She didn't tap it. She put her entire body weight behind the blow. The reinforced glass of the scanner shattered. Plastic shards flew into the air.

Below, the crowd gasped. Miller took a step forward, his rifle lowered in confusion. "What is she doing?"

Nova didn't stop. She jammed her glass fist into the hole she had just made. She pushed past the broken screen, deep into the guts of the locking mechanism.

Her fingers found the live wires. The fiber optics. The copper veins of the Omni-Corp network.

"Jack in," Nova commanded.

ZZZAAAAAPP.

The connection wasn't smooth. It was a car crash.

Raw voltage slammed into her arm. It traveled up the glass lattice, burning through the nerve endings in her shoulder, exploding into her brain. Nova threw her head back, a silent scream tearing at her throat. Her body went rigid on the ladder.

The world dissolved.

The tunnel, the refugees, the smell of rust—it all vanished.

She was in the Grey.

It was a void. A digital construct of the lock’s internal logic.

Standing in front of her was a Wall.

It towered into the infinite darkness—a sheer cliff of scrolling red code. It was smooth, impenetrable, and radiated a palpable sense of judgment.

PROTOCOL: BIO-SCAN. SCANNING SUBJECT...

A beam of red light hit Nova’s digital avatar. It felt like being stripped naked.

SUBJECT IDENTIFIED: NOVA VANE. ORIGIN: SECTOR 4 (SLUMS). STATUS: INDIGENT. HEALTH: MALNOURISHED. CREDIT SCORE: 0.

The Wall boomed with a voice that sounded like every bureaucrat who had ever denied her food stamps, every cop who had ever moved her along, every automated rejection email she had ever received.

ACCESS DENIED. TRASH DATA DETECTED.

"I am not trash," Nova said. Her voice in the construct echoed, thin and weak against the roar of the code.

CORRECTION: YOU ARE UNAUTHORIZED. YOU DO NOT BELONG IN THE HIGH-RISES. YOU BELONG IN THE DIRT.

The Wall seemed to grow taller. It projected images onto its surface—memories ripped from her own mind.
